This is word for word and picture for picture duplicate information from Harold Hall's other book, "Milling". Because "Milling, a complete course" is the same book as "Milling" only, sold under a different title, Amazon was good enough to refund my cost without requiring me to retrieve my copy from the trash and send it back to them. It is interesting that none of the other reviewers picked up on this although many complained that "Milling, a complete course" was much less than a complete course. Maybe no one else bothered to but both books.
I did learn a little about work holding, but because I don't have access to a lathe, I can't do most of the projects in the book. I tried to find unfinished angle plate castings, but the ones that I did find were actually more expensive than finished ones. The book also does not really cover tramming the mill or mill vise.I'm sure there must be projects he could have included that would not have required custom-made screws or shafts. Micrometer stands can be made cheaply from scrap pieces of plate and angle and a few pieces of aluminum, and knobs that you can purchase from home improvement stores.
The title of the book is a misnomer, since this is far from a complete course on milling. It is, however, a good book for a starter for somebody who's bought a small home mill and has discovered that it's missing even the most basic tools and has no real instructions with it. I've been a machinist since the mid-1980's and have plenty of practice and tools, and there were even a few items among the projects that I intend to build. Given the price, if you've just bought a small mill and haven't the foggiest idea what to do with it, this book is money well spent. I gave it only four stars, however, mainly because it's not what it claims to be when it says it's a "complete" course. Instead, it's an excellent place to start.
This is a different approach than other books in the series in that it teaches the use of the mill through accessory projects that produce required accessories. There are hold downs, clamps blocks right angle adapters, etc. that will keep one busy for quite a while and will outfit the mill station with useful hardware.Good investment for the money, and different from the other learn to mill books, even those in the Workshop Practice Series.
Book is not for the novice milling person, you need more than just basic knowledge to use this book. But, if you have some knowledge, it is a good reference to make some needed tools.
You make a very complicated grinding rest in this book. I have yet to even touch that project yet so i can't comment on the quality of the instruction but Mr. Hall explains a lot of things about milling that would normally take years of broken tools to learn on your own.
There is some decent products in this, but not really beginner projects and not really much explanation of who, what and why. Meh.
Not overly complicated, good walk though of some milling operations with explanation. I am glade I have the book for reference. Good starting projects to get one comfortable with milling.
